Wellington Flyers clinches first place in West Prince Senior Hockey League

ABRAM-VILLAGE – A four-goal third period in their final regular season game, gave the Wellington Flyers a 7-4 win over the Alberton Regals and clinched first place in the West Prince Senior Hockey League regular season.

The O’Leary Évangéline-Central Credit Union Maroons can tie the Flyers for top spot with a win over the Regals in the final game of the regular season Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the Jacques Cartier Arena. But the Flyers own the tie-breaker after winning both of their head-to-head-match-ups with the Maroons this season.

The Regals (1-6) will finish fourth and will face the Flyers (6-2) in one semifinal while the Maroons (5-2) will square off against the Tignish Aces (3-5) in the other semifinal.

The Maroons defeated the Aces 4-1 Saturday night in O’Leary.

Flyers 7, Regals 4

In front of about 500 fans, the teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-3 after two periods before the T.J. Campbell-Abel Arsenault-Sam Bernard line went to work for the Flyers early in the third. Campbell from Arsenault and Bernard put the Flyers out in front 2:47 into the third and Bernard from Campbell and Arsenault scored what would stand up as the game-winner 5:13 into the third.

The Regals cut the lead to 5-4 with 13:23 remaining but Darcy Lapierre with 11:40 remaining and Hardy Callaghan with 5:42 remaining rounded out the scoring for the Flyers.

Campbell led the Flyers with two goals and two assists. Callaghan and Owen Arsenault each contributed a goal and two assists while Bernard and Lapierre had 1-1 summaries. Mitchell Phillips had the other Flyers goal and Abel Arsenault was credited with two assists.

Tyson McNeill was the Regals leading point-getter with two assists. Dylan Carragher, Conner Dillon, Logan Smallman and Ned O’Brien were the Regals goal-scorers. Jake Getson, Jason Smallman, Kirk Ramsay and Kenzie Horne each picked up single helpers.

The Flyers were assessed five of the game’s seven minor penalties. The Regals also picked up a 10-minute misconduct.

Maroons 4, Aces 1

Mike MacIssac completed a natural hat trick 18 seconds into the second period to give the host Maroons a 3-0 lead over the Aces and his brother Jeff made it 4-1 for the Maroons with a minute and a half remaining in the game. About 500 spectators took in the action.

Nick Reilly (2) and Justin Bernard earned assists in the Maroons’ win.

Evan Shea from Mitch Doucette scored for the Aces.

The Aces were assessed majors, for fighting and head contact, two game misconducts and two minors while the Maroons took a fighting major, game misconduct and two minors.
