ABRAM-VILLAGE, P.E.I. — The West Prince Senior Hockey League’s regular season champion Wellington Arsenault Bros Flyers began the playoffs with a victory.

The Flyers defeated the Alberton Regals Wednesday night 7-3 in front of 700 fans at the Evangeline Recreation Centre to start their best-of-five semifinal.

The Regals host Game 2 Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at the Jacques Cartier Arena in Alberton while the O’Leary Évangéline-Central Credit Union Maroons and the Tignish Aces play the opener of the other semifinal Saturday at 8 p.m. at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre.

Colton Gallant’s power-play goal, 14:55 into Wednesday’s game, was the winner as the Flyers built 4-1 and 6-2 period leads.

T.J. Campbell led the Flyers with two goals and an assist. Gallant, Devan Arsenault and Nick Arsenault all had a goal and an assist. Mitchell Phillips and Jake Arsenault also scored.

Nathan Arsenault (2), Tyler Brown (2), Abel Arsenault, Colin Arsenault and Owen Arsenault were all credited with assists.

Jason Smallman had two goals and Ryan Perry had two assists to lead the Regals’ offence. Taylor DesRoches also scored and Kenzie Horne, Ned O’Brien and Curklan Fraser added assists.

The Flyers were assessed six of the game’s 10 minor penalties. Each team was assessed a fighting major and a game misconduct.
