SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Josh Ward made 31 saves to backstop the Amherst Ramblers to a 3-1 victory over the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals in a Maritime Junior Hockey League exhibition game at Eastlink Arena on Sunday night.

Ward stopped all 12 shots he faced in the opening period, turned aside 10 of 11 in the middle frame and was perfect on nine tests in the final 20 minutes.

Offensively, Liam Smith scored twice to lead the Ramblers. Michael Sack also scored for Amherst while Cole Edwards, assisted by Landon Clow and Sid McNeill, countered for the Capitals.

The first period was scoreless and the Ramblers took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Mavrick Goyer allowed two goals on 20 shots in 40 minutes of play between the pipes for the Caps. Stephen Giansante stopped five of six shots during 18:43 of action.

The game’s three stars were:

1. Josh Ward (Ramblers), 2. Liam Smith (Ramblers), 3. Cole Edwards (Capitals).

The Caps pay a return visit to Amherst on Monday night.
