KINKORA, P.E.I. — A standout on the volleyball court has been recognized by Kinkora Regional High School (KRHS).
Shaelynn McCardle has been chosen as the KRHS Greco Pizza/Capt. Sub student-athlete of the month.
A Grade 11 student, the 16-year-old daughter of Chris and Lisa McCardle of Kinkora played the setter position and was named the most valuable player of the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior A Girls Volleyball League provincial championship in November as the Blazers won back-to-back provincial titles. She was also named a first-team league all-star.
“Shaelynn is a competitive and determined player and that shows through her hustle,” said KRHS volleyball coach Evan Killorn. “She would not allow the team to lose.”
Killorn described Shaelynn as a “gym rat” who will never pass up the opportunity to play volleyball. He also described her as a “highly coachable” athlete.
“The offence ran through her ability to see each game strategy and any situation,” added Killorn. “She is an excellent server and a defensive player.”
Shaelynn, who plays right wing, will suit up with the Blazers in the annual high school hockey tournament in the spring. She will also compete in three track-and-field events – 100 metres, long jump and discus.
Outside of school, Shaelynn is a member of the Mid-Isle Wildcats of the P.E.I. Midget AAA Female Hockey League and plays both indoor and beach volleyball with the Red Rock club.
Shaelynn’s plans following graduation from high school are undecided.
