UPEI women's backcourt stars in Panthers win over Capers

SYDNEY, N.S. — Jenna Mae Ellsworth and Reese Baxendale combined for 43 points Saturday to lead the UPEI Panthers to a 62-57 road victory over the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball.

The game was worth four points in the standings.

Ellsworth had 22 points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists and a steal while Baxendale had 21 points, three steals, two rebounds and two dimes. Carolina Del Santo had a team-high 12 rebounds.

MacKenzee Ryan had a game-high 24 points for the Capers while Audrey Rankin had 13 rebounds.

UPEI held quarter leads of 16-14, 37-28 and 50-44.

The Panthers shot better from the field (34-30 per cent) and the free-throw line (85-54) while the Capers did better from behind the arc (40-31).

UPEI improved to 9-2 while Cape Breton is 3-8. The Panthers host the St. FX X-Women Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
