Two Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ rookies have been selected to play in an international tournament.
Defenceman Zach Biggar of Portage and forward Colby MacArthur of Summerside have been named to Team Canada East for the 2019 World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 7 to 15 in Dawson Creek, B.C. The five-team tournament also includes Team Canada West, United States, Russia and the Czech Republic.
Team Canada East is comprised of 22 players from the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s five eastern leagues – Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL), Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL), Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League and Maritime Junior Hockey League.
MacArthur, 18, has nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 23 regular-season games while the 16-year-old Biggar has averaged a point a game with 23 points – three goals and 20 assists. They sit second and third in the league’s rookie scoring race, behind teammate Bennett MacArthur, who has 32 points – 16 goals and 16 assists.
Campbellton Tigers head coach Greg Leland is an assistant coach with Team Canada East while Mark Francisco of the Valley Wildcats will serve as team equipment manager.
Team Canada East’s first tournament game is against Russia on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m., Atlantic Time.
