SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Summerside Western Capitals are looking for someone to fill “Cappy’s” robust shoulder pads.

Cappy, the bright red and orange mascot of the local MHL team, was retired from service in 2015 after having played about five seasons. Now the Capital’s are on the hunt for his replacement.

Brianna Flood, marketing and sponsorship consultant with the team, said they are looking to up their mascot game because they want to make the colourful character a prominent part of the overall entertainment package when the team hits home ice.

Because choosing a new mascot can be such a momentous occasion the team decided to open up the design portion to the public by holding a design contest.

“We are looking for a mascot that is going to put on a show and pump up the crowd, adding a new entertainment element to the Summerside Western Capitals brand.  We believe that a fresh mascot will add to the overall experience of attending home games,” said Flood.

Entries can be hand-drawn or digitally created. A suggested name for the mascot should be included.

The grand prize for the winning design is a $1,500 package that includes four Capitals season passes, four tickets to the Brothers 2 dinner theatre and $300 in cash. Submission should be sent to [email protected]

The contest is open to all ages. While the original deadline for the contest was Oct. 18, Flood said any submissions received by next Monday, Oct. 21, will be accepted.

“We are looking for someone who can put on a show pregame, during the game and throughout the intermissions. Whether they are entertaining us with a dance routine, backflips, or skating around the ice – we want a performer."

Mike James, a co-owner of the team, said he’s looking forward to seeing the energy the new mascot will bring to Credit Union Place.

“We are very fortunate to have an incredibly loyal Caps fan base and are always striving to enhance their experience.  We believe a new mascot will add to the overall excitement of attending home games and broaden the entertainment aspect of our organization,” said
James.

The team is also looking for someone to bring their new mascot to life.

They’re on the hunt for someone with a skating, dance or gymnastic background who can put on a show.

“We are looking for someone who can put on a show pregame, during the game and throughout the intermissions. Whether they are entertaining us with a dance routine, backflips, or skating around the ice – we want a performer," said Flood.

Auditions will be held in November. Specifics dates and times will be announced on the team’s social media channels at a later date.

The team is hoping to have the mascot in place by the new year.
