MORELL, P.E.I. — Stephen Anderson isn’t a one-trick pony.
As good as he is as a hockey player, he also excels on the golf course.
The Morell native won the Prince Edward Island Golf Association player of the year series after winning the Mill River Open and finishing second at the other four events.
“I love it,” Anderson said. “You put the hockey gear away in the closet for the summer and you bring out the golf clubs.”
Anderson played golf growing up but never took it too seriously. He got involved in the golf tour in the past few years and has gone from being competitive to routinely being in contention atop the leaderboard.
“These tournaments, I absolutely love them. I just love the competitive part to them. it’s a completely different feeling from the hockey where … if you ever have a bad shift, you have a team to pick you up,” he said. “But if you have a bad hole on the golf course, it’s a pretty dark feeling. It’s a different type of mental grind, but just to keep the competitive juices flowing, I’ve been really enjoying them.”
Tim Yorke has played with and against Anderson on the golf course.
“Stephen Anderson couldn't be a nicer young man. I absolutely think the world of him,” he said. “Stephen has basically worked his butt off to get where he is.”
He said Anderson’s game plays at any course across the province.
“He has the power game, he has the fitness game, he has it all that young fella and he has a tremendous attitude.”
Anderson is heading south of the border to pursue a pro hockey career this week.
“It’s probably a pretty neat spot for him to land in Florida,” said UNB hockey coach Gardiner MacDougall. “If he’s not playing hockey, I’m sure he’ll get the odd golf game in as well.”
