Squires named bantam hockey league’s best

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Central Attack forward Cam Squires is the MVP of the Prince Edward Island Major Bantam AAA Hockey League.

The awards were presented during the first round of the playoffs and Hockey P.E.I. released the list on Tuesday.

Squires had a league-leading 85 points (40 goals and 45 assists) in 26 games as the Attack finished first with a 21-7-1-1 record.

Eastern Express teammates Caleb MacDonald and Harry Clements were named the top forward and defenceman, respectively, while George Gallant of the Prince County Warriors was the top goalie.

MacDonald was second in league scoring with 71 points (37-34) in 27 games while Clements had 32 points (14-18) in 24 games for the second-place Express (18-10-2). Gallant had a 3-10-2 record with a 5.42 goals-against average and an .857 save percentage in 16 games for the third-place Warriors (6-18-2-4).

Central’s Brennan Murphy was named the most improved player after recording 64 points (30-34) in 28 games while Eastern’s Evan Nicholson was the rookie of the year after a 40-point campaign (20-20) in 30 games and Mid-Isle’s Grayson Laporte was recognized with the most sportsmanlike player after recording 31 points (17-14) and 26 penalty minutes in 30 games.

Hard hat awards went to Central’s Luke Coughlin, Eastern’s Tanton Wooldridge, Mid-Isle’s Laporte and Prince County’s Patrick Shea.
