TORONTO, Ont. — Stratford’s Sarah Steele had four shots on goal Saturday, but her Toronto Six team lost 3-0 to the Metropolitan Riveters in the opening game of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) season.

It is the first season for the Toronto expansion team.

Leila Kilduff had two goals and Emily Janiga added one while Sonjia Shelly stopped 40 shots for the shutout. Elaine Chuli stopped 16 shots in the loss.

It was part of a three-game day at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. Three more games are scheduled for today in the six-team league.

Steele, a 25-year-old defenceman, played three years in Europe after completing her English and psychology degrees at Boston University.
