CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Former Charlottetown Islanders captain Pierre-Olivier (P.O.) Joseph had an assist in his first NHL game.

The 21-year-old defenceman from Chambly, Que., picked up the helper as his shot bounced off the end boards to Teddy Blueger, who scored the tying goal 11 minutes into the third period for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens went on to defeat the New York Rangers 4-3 in shootout.

Joseph also had three shots and three hits in 13 minutes of ice time and was named the game’s third star.

Joseph played 3 ½ season with the Islanders from 2015-16 to December 2017 after being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft. He was selected in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2017 NHL draft by the Arizona Coyotes and was part of the trade that sent winger Phil Kessel from Pittsburgh to Arizona.

The Rangers and Penguins were scheduled to play Sunday night.
