P.E.I. picks up first win at Brier

CALGARY, Alta. — The Eddie MacKenzie-skipped Team P.E.I. scored three in the ninth to defeat Nunavut 7-4 Tuesday for its first win of the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary.

P.E.I., representing the Montague and Crapaud clubs, is 1-4.

Nunavut, which dropped to 0-5, opened the scoring with a deuce in the third. After the teams traded singles, P.E.I. tied it with a deuce in the sixth and took the lead by stealing one in the seventh.

Nunavut tied it with one in the eighth but conceded after giving up three in the ninth.

The Island champs, which includes third Tyler Smith, second Sean Ledgerwood, lead Ryan Lowery and alternate Aaron Bartling from Alberta, play Team Canada Wednesday. Charlottetown’s Brett Gallant is Team Canada’s second. The Brad Gushue-skipped rink from St. John’s, N.L., defeated Nova Scotia 8-6 on Tuesday to improve to 3-2.

Seven Mile Bay native Adam Casey is Manitoba’s third. The Jason Gunnlaugson-skipped squad defeated the Northwest Territories 7-4 Tuesday afternoon and was playing New Brunswick in the late draw.
