O'LEARY, P.E.I. — The Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club will have two chances today to defend their P.E.I. mixed fours provincial curling championship.

The Newson foursome of lead Miranda Ellis, second Andrew MacDougall, third Melissa Morrow and Newson have won the provincial championship the last two years. Newson and MacDougall were part of the 2014 championship team as well.

This year they lost their very first game of the nine-team, modified triple-knockout championship Friday afternoon at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary 7-4 to the Lauren Ferguson rink from Cornwall before stitching together six consecutive victories.

They can repeat as provincial champions with a win against Nick Blanchard’s Crapaud rink in today’s 2 p.m. draw. A loss to the Blanchard foursome would send the two teams back out onto the Maple Leaf Curling Clubs ice for a 6 p.m. winner-take-all final.
The Crapaud team of lead Terri Wood, second Jamie Stride, third Stephanie Schnare and Blanchard has a 5-2 summary. Their two losses were to Newson in the B and C finals. Blanchard won the A final over the Alex MacFadgen rink from Charlottetown Curling Club.

Newson won the C qualifier over Blanchard 5-1 Sunday evening.

This year’s winner will represent P.EI. at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club in Alberta from Nov. 7-15.
