TYNE VALLEY, P.E.I. — Tyne Valley’s new rink is starting to rise from the ashes.
Work has been ongoing at the site for about a month and the new building’s foundation is now mostly in place.
Organizers of the facility’s rebuilding efforts are hopeful the structure will be enclosed by January and ready for use by the community by summer 2021.
“Our goal is to have it ready for Oyster Festival next August, if there is going to be a festival, kind of thing,” said Tyne Valley Mayor Jeff Noye.
“All things considered we’re pretty much right on schedule. We can’t complain, it could be a lot worse with everything happening, that’s for sure.”
The former Tyne Valley rink was destroyed by fire in December, 2019. Since then the community has set their sites on a new $10 million multi-purpose facility.
Public funding for the new rink was announced earlier this year, with $3.9 million coming from the federal government, $3.3 million from the provincial and $3.1 coming from the community itself.
The fundraising committee’s goal is still a moving target, added Noye, as there are some factors that could still impact the final bill. That being said, support, financial and otherwise, from the Island community at large continues to be strong.
