New additions pace Summerside Western Capitals to victory in first game

TRURO, N.S. — Mark Hillier made a good first impression.

The 18-year-old forward from Labrador City, N.L., scored four times Saturday as the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals thumped the Truro Bearcats 8-1 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action. It was the Caps’ first game since Nov. 21 due to COVID-19.

Cole Galata had four assists and Justin Ertel chipped in three helpers. Hillier, Galata and Ertel were teammates at St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Ont., who joined the Caps during the recent Christmas break.

Marc Richard had two goals while singles went to Owen Gilhula and Cole Edwards.

Cam Roberts and Sid McNeill each chipped in a pair of assists while singles went to Theo Citrullo, Chris McQuaid, Josh MacDonald and Edwards.

Holden Kodak replied with Truro’s goal.

Nathan Torchia made 34 saves for the win while Alec MacDonald stopped 30 shots in the loss.
The Caps, who held 2-0 and 4-1 period leads, went 1-for-4 on the power play while Truro was 1-for-2.

Summerside improved to 4-1-1-0 while Truro is 7-8-1-0. The Capitals visit Amherst, N.S., tonight for a 7 p.m. game with the Ramblers.
