Summerside opens up nine-point lead atop MHL overall standings

MIRAMICHI, N.B. — Kallum Muirhead of Charlottetown celebrated his 21st birthday with a five-point performance for the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals.
Muirhead had two goals and three assists to lead the Capitals to a 7-3 victory over the Miramichi Timberwolves on Saturday night.
Summerside captain Brodie MacArthur had a goal and two assists to take over sole possession of second place in the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s (MHL) all-time scoring race for the regular season. MacArthur now has 345 points and trails only Duane Saulnier, who has 352 and played for the Halifax Lions and Dairy Queen Blizzard in the late 1980s. The Caps have nine regular-season games remaining.

Nine-point lead

The victory improved the Caps record to 35-6-2 (won-lost-overtime losses) and opened up a nine-point lead over the Edmundston Blizzard (28-9-7) in both the MHL's overall and Eastlink North Division standings.
The Caps return to action on Thursday against the Campbellton Tigers (27-13-5) in the first of a home-and-home series between the teams at Eastlink Arena. The Caps will make the return visit to Campbellton, N.B., on Friday. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.

LeCouffe scores twice

Before 613 fans at the Miramichi Civic Centre, Marc-Andre LeCouffe scored twice while Carson MacKinnon and Cam Roberts each added a goal and an assist. Zach Biggar (2), Ed McNeill and Jacob Arsenault earned assists.
Charlottetown native Connor McGregor had two goals and an assist to lead the Timberwolves (11-27-4). Jared Weber added a single goal and Lucas MacAulay of Cardigan chipped in with a single helper.
The teams were tied 2-2 after the first period before the Caps scored three unanswered second-period goals to take control.
Winning goaltender Alec MacVicar stopped 32 of 35 shots. Olivier Charbonneau faced 46 shots in the Miramichi goal.
The Caps were 3-for-5 on the power play while the Timberwolves went 2-for-7.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Kallum Muirhead (Caps), 2. Connor McGregor (Timberwolves), 3. Marc-Andre LeCouffe (Caps).
