KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — The Moncton Flyers continued their mastery over the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild on Saturday night.
The Flyers built a 5-2 second-period lead and added an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining to defeat the Wild 6-4 at Credit Union Centre in Kensington. It was the sixth win in seven regular-season meetings for the Flyers versus the Wild this season.
Sam Savoie scored a hat trick to lead the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Major Midget Hockey League-leading Flyers, who took a 30-2-1 (won-lost-overtime losses) record into Sunday’s home game against the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Knights (10-17-5).
Cedric Bastarache, Yannick Duplessis and Alexis Daniel also dented the twine for the Flyers.
Austin Arsenault scored twice and assisted on another to lead the second-place Wild (19-10-3). Sam MacNeill and Donovan Arsenault also found the back of the net while Reid Peardon (2), Alex Graham (2), Landon Clow, Isaac Vos and Kieran Rennie were credited with helpers.
The Flyers held period advantages of 3-2 and 5-4.
Overall, the Flyers outshot the Wild 46-27. Nick Sheehan earned the goaltending win over Josh Smith.
The Wild will host a league showcase on Feb. 15 and 16. Each team will play two games and the two-day event is expected to draw scouts from different levels.
