CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Despite a 35-point difference in the regular season, the fourth-place Mid-Isle Matrix gave the regular-season-champion Central Attack all they could handle in Game 1 of the playoffs.
The Attack pulled out a 4-3 victory as the team’s opened the best-of-five semifinal series in the P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League at Simmons Sport Centre in Charlottetown on Sunday. Game 2 is at the North Star Arena in North Rustico on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The Matrix led 1-0 after the opening period and the teams entered the final frame tied 2-2.
Nathan Mossey scored twice early in the third period to stake the Attack to a 4-2 lead, but a late goal from Nolan Cobb made for an interesting finish.
Connor Pierce and Brennan Murphy also scored for the Attack, who completed the regular season at 21-7-1-1 (won-lost-tied-overtime losses) for 44 points. Finn Morris and Brett Arsenault each added a pair of assists.
Sam Bowness scored the other two goals for the Matrix (3-24-3-0), who completed the regular season with nine points. Graysen LaPorte collected two helpers.
Thomas MacAdam earned the goaltending win and Kale Hunter was between the pipes for Mid-Isle.
