CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Kris McKinnon has stepped down as head coach of the Holland College women’s soccer team after nine years on the Hurricanes sidelines.

The Stratford native spent the last seven seasons as the team’s head coach after previously serving as an assistant coach for two years.

“It has been a pleasure to be part of Hurricanes athletics for the past nine seasons,” shared McKinnon. “Many memories have been gained and will never be forgotten. It was not an easy decision to make but one I felt was necessary at this time as the program continues to grow. I would like to thank (director of athletics and recreation) Albert Roche and his team for all their support over the years.”

McKinnon led the Hurricanes to their third Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) conference title in 2013. They also won in 2016 and 2019. The team also finished with second in 2014 and 2015.

McKinnon finishes with a 62-27-14 record as head coach in ACAA regular season and playoff action plus three Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships.  In 2015 he was named the ACAA coach of the year.

“Throughout his nine years with us at Holland College, Kris has made a significant impact to our program and has contributed immensely as a valued coach, mentor and friend to many,” Roche said. “While we realize he has made the tough decision to step down, we know he will always be a supporter of our soccer program and we sincerely thank him for his service.”

The Hurricanes are searching for their fourth head coach in team history. Meredith Cameron and Amy Connolly served as head coaches prior to McKinnon.

Applicants are asked to submit their resume, cover letter and three references, quoting Competition #20-02 to aroche@hollandcollege.com prior to Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.

The Hurricanes women’s soccer team has claimed five ACAA conference banners and five silver medals since its inaugural season in 2006. It has missed the playoffs twice during the 14-year span. In 2012 the team hosted the nationals in Cornwall.
