CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Noah Laybolt made 47 saves to backstop the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros to an important win over the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers in the Island Junior Hockey League on Wednesday night.
The Metros prevailed 8-1 and opened up a three-point lead over the Vipers in the race for second place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Metros now sit at 13-14-2 (won-lost-overtime losses) and the Vipers are 11-14-3.
At the Cody Banks Arena in Charlottetown, Drew Bowman (2-1), Keegan Mitchell (2), Cale Pierce (1-2), Barrington Duffy (1-1), Hunter Bradley and Grant Koughan scored for the Metros, who built period leads of 2-0 and 6-0. Nick Bowman (3) and Emmett Lyons (2) had multiple-assist performances.
Taylor Read netted the lone goal for the Vipers.
Overall, the Vipers held a 48-41 shots-on-goal advantage. Laybolt was especially sharp early as he stopped all 21 shots directed his way in the first period and 18 in the middle frame. Ben Parent was between the pipes for Kensington.
The Vipers were assessed four of the game’s seven minor penalties.
