Lori (Knickle) Lancaster will be the chef de mission for Nova Scotia at the 2021 Canada Games.
Lancaster, who grew up in Charlottetown, works in the alumni relations department at Mount Saint Vincent University and is the head coach of the Lockview High School girls’ basketball team in Fall River.
Lancaster played five years with the UPEI Panthers basketball team and was an assistant coach with the Panthers and Dalhousie Tigers. She played for Team P.E.I. at the 1987 and 1989 Canada Games in Cape Breton, N.S., and Saskatoon, Sask., respectively, as basketball moved from being a winter sport to a summer sport.
“I believe strongly that there are no other opportunities or life lessons that quite compare to those gained from sport,” Lancaster said in a news release. “The challenges, the triumphs, the disappointments, and all the hard work that go into being a committed athlete or coach is something that will carry an individual in all aspects of their life.”
Her communications experience and passion for sports make her a good fit for the role.
"As a former coach and as an athlete I appreciate how crucial Lori’s chef de mission role is in ensuring our athletes' success at the upcoming Canada Games and their full enjoyment of the experience," Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage Leo Glavine said. "The passion and commitment she has shown in the past will serve our mission team and our athletes well next summer.”
The 2021 Canada Games will be held in Niagara, Ont., Aug. 6-21.
