FREDERICTON, N.B. — It was a tough day on the basketball court for the Holland Hurricanes on Sunday.
The Hurricanes’ teams both lost to the St. Thomas Tommies, with the women’s squad falling 59-57 and the Tommies defeating the Holland College men 85-76, in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) play in Fredericton, N.B.,
Both Holland College teams were scheduled to close out the first half of the schedule in Moncton, N.B., against the Crandall Chargers on Monday night.
Women
In the women’s game, the ‘Canes would jump out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter and entered the half trailing 29-28.
The start of the third quarter proved costly for the ‘Canes as they fell behind 45-32, before mounting a comeback to tie the game at 45-45 entering the final period.
The evenly-matched teams traded points in the final frame, with the Tommies outlasting the Hurricanes for the two-point victory.
Ashley Plaggenhoef had 14 points to lead the way offensively for the Hurricanes. Aki Kobayashi added 14 and Rylee Connolly chipped in 10 off the bench.
Kassandra Little was close to another double-double performance, recording nine points and nine rebounds in the game. Kobayashi added six rebounds, eight assists and five steals and Plaggenhoef recorded seven rebounds and three assists.
The Hurricanes fell to 3-2 (won-lost) on the season and sit in fourth in the ACAA, four points back of first. The Tommies moved to 5-1.
Men
On the men’s side, the Hurricanes opened up a 15-12 lead after the first quarter. A strong second quarter by St. Thomas put the ‘Canes in a hole as they trailed 38-24 at the half.
A strong third quarter by the Hurricanes closed the Tommies lead to 57-54 heading to the fourth, but this is as close as they would come.
Jordan Holness led the way offensively for the ‘Canes with 24 points and Jayden McMullen added 19 and Xavier Starks recorded 14 off the bench.
Bryce Corless and Josh White each had nine rebounds to lead the way for the ‘Canes and Holness added six.
Holland College dropped to 3-2 and sit in fourth place. St. Thomas is 4-2.
