CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Off a 14-day rest, Freddie is again poised to take on the top trotters tonight at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park as Gold Cup and Saucer week racing begins.
The 10-dash program begins at 7 p.m., which will be the opening post times for all Gold Cup and Saucer week evening cards.
The $2,400 open trot lines up in Race 5 with Freddie the morning-line choice in the field of six for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and owner Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston.
The 64-time winner has had a solid campaign this season with four wins and a second from six starts. His only trip out of triactor was his last on July 30 where he got away last and had to settle for fourth by three-lengths to winner Windmeredontuworry.
That rival has Post 6 in the field this week with Gilles Barrieau back at the controls from the Glenn MacKay Jr., stable of Summerside. Hop Up was victorious in the Island Ocean Trot Classic series on Sunday in Summerside and will retains the services of Corey MacPherson in the bike while Glider Man is sure to be near the front of the action from Post 1 with Kenny Arsenault in the race bike.
Maritime champion Daisy River (Jason Hughes) has Post 4 while Majian Tango (Jim Ripley) will look to bounce back from a break in stride in his latest from Post 5.
Lean On Who makes her Island debut in the Race 10 finale for a $1,600 purse with MacPherson in the bike behind the six-year-old daughter of Western Ideal. The pacing mare last raced at Vernon Downs in New York with John MacDonald driving and now moves into the P.E.I. stable of his brother Joe MacDonald.
