ROSEBANK, P.E.I. — Multi-sport athlete Chandler DesRoches is Westisle Composite High School’s Greco Pizza/Capt. Sub student-athlete of the month.
Baseball coach Trevor Wood said the Grade 11 student was a key contributor to Westisle’s back-to-back P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior Baseball League championships.
“He’s our key pitcher, go-to pitcher,” Wood said, noting Chandler was called upon to lead the team through the semifinals in both championship runs. “We knew he was our best shot of getting into the finals, so he became a very integral part of that.”
Even when not pitching, he’s in the game and is one of the team’s top batters, noted Wood.
“In my coaching career,” Wood said, “there is only a handful of athletes at the calibre that Chandler is at. He’s certainly a pleasure to coach, is a very coachable, quiet, unassuming individual, but he’s out there to compete, there’s no question about it.”
The 17-year-old son of Julie and Randy DesRoches of St. Felix plays summer baseball with the Western Mariners and midget AAA hockey with the Western Regals.
Besides baseball, Chandler represents the Wolverines in badminton and track and field.
DesRoches has university aspirations following graduation from high school, potentially in the engineering field.
