BRIDGEWATER, N.S. — Owen Gilhula recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals to a 4-2 road win over the South Shore Lumberjacks on Friday night.

The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) game was played before 264 fans at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.

Gilhula, who played the previous four seasons with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League, is averaging two points a game – two goals and two assists – in his first two games as a Capital.

Cole Edwards and Riley MacDougall also scored for the Capitals, who are off to a 2-0-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) start to the 2020-21 regular season. Cam Roberts added an assist.

Stratford native Sam MacNeill, who played with the Kensington Wild major under-18 team last year, and Will Chisholm countered for the Lumberjacks (0-5-0).

The Caps held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1.

Winning goaltender Mavrick Goyer turned aside 28 of 30 shots. Robert Forbes allowed three goals on 38 shots between the pipes for the Lumberjacks. The Caps’ fourth goal was scored into an empty net with five seconds remaining.

The game’s three stars were:

1. Owen Gilhula (Capitals), 2. Will Chisholm (Lumberjacks), 3. Robert Forbes (Lumberjacks).

The Capitals are back in action on Saturday in Yarmouth, N.S., against the Mariners (3-2-0) at 7:30 p.m.

Yarmouth lost 3-0 at home to the Valley Wildcats on Friday night.

The Capitals’ next home game is against the Lumberjacks on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m.

Around the league

Ethan Landry, who has family connections to P.E.I., scored his second goal of the season for the Wildcats. Landry’s goal at 13:58 of the third period gave Valley a 2-0 lead.

Montague native and defenceman Zac Arsenault earned an assist in helping the Grand Falls Rapids to a 6-2 road win over the Campbellton Tigers on Friday night. It was Campbellton’s first regular-season game due to the recent outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Campbellton area. Arsenault is an assistant captain with the Rapids.

North Bedeque native Coleton Perry picked up an assist for the Tigers against the Rapids. Perry is the Tigers’ team captain.

Evan Gallant of Abram-Village scored his first goal of the season to help the Pictou County Crushers to a 4-2 home-ice victory over the Truro Bearcats on Thursday night. Gallant scored into an empty net at 18:46 of the third period to give the Crushers a 4-1 lead.
