SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — “Welcome to the Jack Grant and Dominik Tmej Show” is how Eastlink Arena public address announcer Jeremy MacDonald could have introduced fans to the shootout round of a Maritime Junior Hockey League game Saturday night.
The two goaltenders were the story of a marathon shootout, which featured just three goals scored in 30 attempts – 15 by each team.
When all was said and done, Grant’s Red Wings scored the extra goal for a 5-4 win that snapped the Capitals’ 13-game winning streak and handed Summerside its first loss on home ice in 14 regular-season games.
Tyler Browning scored the winning goal in the shootout’s 15th round for the Red Wings. The only other goals were both scored in the 12th round, with Fredericton’s Brady Patterson and Zach Thususka of the Caps hitting the twine.
Never trailed
The Red Wings, who improved to 12-9-1 (won-lost-overtime losses), never trailed before 898 fans. Fredericton led 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3 before Summerside rookie Bennett MacArthur tied the game at 18:45 of the third period with Tmej on the bench for an extra attacker.
Overtime solved nothing as the Caps outshot the Red Wings 3-1. Overall, the shots-on-goal totals were even 37-37 through regulation and the five-minute extra period.
Aiden MacIntosh (1-1), Ethan Stuckess (1-1), Liam Smith and Ryan O’Toole scored regulation-time goals for the Red Wings. Evan White (2), Alex Pellerin, Eliot Bergbauer and Jared Cosman added assists.
Brodie MacArthur had two goals and an assist to increase his point total to 51 atop the league scoring race. MacArthur, who also hit the 300-point mark in Saturday’s game, is only four behind Jordan Knox in franchise scoring.
Rookie Zach Biggar added a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who before Saturday last suffered a loss (4-3) in Campbellton on Oct. 14. Other helpers were credited to Kallum Muirhead (3), Cam Roberts (2) and Isaac Wilson. Muirhead is one point behind linemate MacArthur in the league scoring race after hitting the 50-point mark.
The Red Wings held period leads of 2-1 and 4-3.
Referees Nick Hann and Thane Arsenault called four minors, one hitting-to-the-head 10-minute misconduct, one fighting major and one game misconduct against the Caps. The Red Wings were assessed four minors, one fighting major and one game misconduct.
The Red Wings were 2-for-2 on the power play while the Caps were 0-for-2.
