Eagles defeat Islanders 5-2 in first of two weekend games in Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Former Charlottetown Islander Shawn Boudrias had a three-point night Friday to help the Cape Breton Eagles beat his former team.

Boudrias had a goal and two assists while Shawn Element scored twice to pace the Eagles to a 5-2 victory at the Eastlink Centre. Egor Sokolov and Mathias Laferriere each had a goal and an assist to round out the scoring for the visitors in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Jarrett Baker, Kyle Havelna and captain Derek Gentile, another former Isles forward, each contributed an assist.

Liam Peyton and Zac Beauregard scored for Charlottetown with assists going to Nikita Alexandrov (2) and Noah Laaouan.

Kevin Mandolese stopped 25 shots for the win while Matthew Welsh had 34 saves in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period while the visitors took a 3-2 lead to the third before an announced crowd of 2,212.

Charlottetown was 1-for-7 on the power play while Cape Breton was 0-for-3.

The Eagles are 25-14-2-1, two points up on the Islanders (23-17-5-0) with three games in hand. The teams play again Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre.
