SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Pictou County Crushers have figured out how to do something not too many teams in the Maritime Junior Hockey League have been able to do.
That is shut down the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals’ high-powered offence.
After dropping a close 2-1 decision in Summerside on Oct. 5, the Crushers shut out the Caps 2-0 on Thursday night to earn a split in the season series between the two Maritime Junior Hockey League teams. The Caps, who sit atop the 12-team league’s overall standings at 23-4-1 (won-lost-overtime losses), have scored a league-high 134 goals in 28 regular-season games.
40 saves
Andrew MacLeod made 40 saves to backstop the Crushers before 582 fans at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Forward Bennett MacArthur and forward/defenceman Isaac Wilson were back in the Caps’ lineup on Thursday after being recalled by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Moncton Wildcats for games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League on Wednesday night.
Dallas Farrell of Roseneath opened the game’s scoring 1:17 into the second period and that goal proved to be the game-winner. Jake Martin made it 2-0 at 15:26 of the third period. Samuel LeBlanc, Logan Vande Meerakker and former Capital Sullivan Sparkes earned assists.
Alec MacVicar stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Capitals.
Each team went 0-for-3 on the power play.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Andrew MacLeod (Crushers), 2. Brodie MacArthur (Caps), 3. Andrew Burden (Crushers).
The Capitals begin a five-game homestand on Saturday against the Miramichi Timberwolves (8-16-4).
