The last point Morgan White scored in her high school volleyball career clinched the championship title for her team the Colonel Gray Colonels.

“It’s been a great season. We only lost one regular-season game, and it was to (Charlottetown) Rural. They beat us 3-0. So, winning this 3-0 and scoring the last point. It was just the perfect thing,” said White, PEISAA Senior AAA Girl Volleyball league tournament MVP.

White and her team claimed gold under the head-coaching of Laura Ready over the Charlottetown Rural Raiders in three sets on Wednesday night (25-22, 25-12 and 25-23).

“It was the icing on the cake. It really topped it all off," she said.

“Our team has worked hard all season. And we’re a close bunch. We were in this situation last year against Kensington Intermediate Senior High School.”

Head coach Ready said there was no certainty as to who was going to win the championship.

“Both teams know they had to earn every point tonight. There was no clear winner.”

The Colonels lost only one regular-season game, to the Rural.

“I’m proud of the team. It was a full effort. Girls came off the bench in crucial moments. Some played exceptionally. They all came in and knew what they had to do.”

Charlottetown Rural head coach Alice Champion said her team was ready technically, but not mentally.

“They just weren’t there. It’s great they came in with confidence over the win last time, but sometimes that isn’t enough.”

Still, she said, “They all fought so hard. Even in that third set. I was able to get everyone on and we had a Grade 10 setter come on. So, I’m excited for next year.”

When she started coaching this year, Champion said she switched up their playing system.

“They adopted it well and they’ve done great.”
