KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Three graduating students were named recipients of prestigious awards during the Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School Awards Gala.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the awards were announced via the school’s Facebook page recently.
Ellen Cole and Charlie DesRoches were selected as athletes of the year while Maddy Rogers received the John Bowness Achievement Award, which recognizes dedication, determination and enthusiasm for sports. The now-retired Bowness coached many KISH teams over a 30-year career as athletic director.
Cole was described “as a born leader on any team, taking charge and motivating her teammates” and was acknowledged for being involved in different activities to support the school community.
Cole played three years of senior basketball and soccer and one year of softball. She was recognized by the P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) as an all-star in soccer and was named the most valuable player of the provincial senior A girls basketball championship in February after leading KISHORA – a combined team from KISH and Kinkora Regional High School – to a gold-medal victory. She scored 35 points in KISHORA’s 51-30 win over Colonel Gray in the final.
DesRoches wore the Torchmen’s green and white jerseys for three years in basketball and one in soccer. He was looked to as a leader on both teams and was also praised for his sportsmanship, on and off the court and field.
He was also recognized for “balancing both academics and athletics.”
DesRoches also gave back to the athletic program by volunteering his time with younger sports teams.
Rogers, who wore KISH colours for three years in volleyball and one year in softball, was praised for continuously working to improve as an athlete and student. She is also active in school life through contributions and volunteerism.
