SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. —
Two Summerside teams swept two provincial tackle football championships on home turf at Eric Johnston Field on Saturday.
The Cooke Insurance Clippers defeated the Cornwall Timberwolves 35-12 to win the franchise’s fifth straight Potato Bowl, which is awarded to the top varsity team. Varsity football features players in Grades 10 to 12.
Mike Friesen (2), Nic Gunning, Kyle Cameron and Breton Brown scored touchdowns for the Clippers. Colin Walsh and Ben Coles had major scores for the Timberwolves.
Both teams entered the championship game with 5-1 (won-lost) records and they split their two head-to-head meetings in the regular season.
Bantams
The Waterwise Spartans won back-to-back Ed Hilton Bowls with a 48-32 upset victory over the Charlottetown Privateers, who entered the bantam final for players in Grades 10 to 12 with a 6-0 regular-season record.
Summerside went 3-3 in the regular season and defeated Cornwall in a semifinal game while first-place Charlottetown received a bye to the final in the three-team league.
Campbell Wadman scored four touchdowns to lead the Spartans. Sam Friesen, on the game’s opening kickoff, Jonas Binkley and Brex MacLeod also scored majors for the Spartans.
Charlie Ross (2), Mathis Blais (2) and Jahkei Munnings found the end zone for the Privateers.
