EDMUNDSTON, N.B. — Rookie Zach Biggar’s power-play goal in the third period was the winner Saturday as the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals defeated the Edmundston Blizzard 5-3.

The host Blizzard outshot the Capitals 16-3 in the first period but found themselves trailing 2-1 in Maritime Junior Hockey League action. Summerside led 3-2 heading to the third but Brock McLeod scored the equalizer with 8:49 left to play.

Biggar, a 16-year-old defenceman from Portage, scored the winner with 1:06 to play and captain Brodie MacArthur iced the victory with an empty-net goal.

Gianluca Fuoco, Kallum Muirhead and Colby MacArthur also scored in the win. Bennett MacArthur had two assists while singles went to Brodie MacMillan, Biggar, Jacob Arsenault, Brodie MacArthur and Marc-Andre LeCouffe.

Chrystopher Collin scored twice for the Blizzard while Tristan Gagnon had two assists.

Dominik Tmej stopped 31 shots for the win while Antoine Lyonnais had 20 saves in the loss.

Summerside was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all three of Edmundston’s chances with the man advantage.

The Capitals improved their league-leading record to 17-3-0-0 while Edmundston (13-6-0-0) is second in the Eastlink North Division. The teams play again today at 3 p.m. in Edmundston, N.B.
