SYDNEY, N.S. — River Denys’ Colten Ellis made 21 saves to help lead the Charlottetown Islanders to a 2-0 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Centre 200 on Friday.

Both of the Islanders goals were scored in the first period in a game which marked the Eagles’ first since Nov. 18 when they defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 8-6 in Sydney.

William Trudeau and Zachary Beauregard scored goals for the Islanders (13-2-0-0).

With the loss, the Eagles’ record falls to 7-9-0-0.

Cape Breton’s William Grimard stopped 30 of 32 shots.

The Eagles and Islanders didn’t take long reuniting with Cape Breton’s Zach Welsh and Charlottetown’s Ben Boyd dropping the gloves at 2:31 of the opening frame. Welsh received an instigator penalty along with his fighting major.

Charlottetown took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes later with Trudeau’s point shot finding the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season on the power play at the four-minute mark of the first period.

The Islanders added an insurance goal prior to the end of the first frame with Beauregard snapping home his first of the season at 19:21.

Charlottetown’s Cédric Desruisseaux was held off the scoresheet, snapping the 13-game point steak the forward had entering Friday’s contest.

The Islanders outshot Cape Breton 32-21 while going 1-for-3 on the power play. The Eagles were 0-for-4 with the man-advantage.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no fans or media were permitted to attend the game.

Cape Breton will return to action on Saturday when they host the Halifax Mooseheads at 7 p.m. at Centre 200 in Sydney.
