Many Islanders, says Heather Howatt, have earned the reputation of punching above their weight.

That is reflected in the developing theme “birthplace of big dreams’’ that has been emerging from visioning sessions over the Canada Winter Games coming to in P.E.I. in 2023.

Howatt, who co-owns and runs Results Marketing and Advertising P.E.I. in Charlottetown with her husband, Brian, is one of nine lead volunteers on the board of management, which is serving largely in an advisory capacity by drawing on a wide range of skills and abilities.

She is tackling the role of vice-president of marketing and media with the board.

She says one big goal is to make the Games as accessible and inviting as possible to draw good crowds to the many events across the province.

“There is no shortage of competition out there in the sports world for eyeballs,’’ she says.

“I think the challenge between now and 2023 is getting everybody else all excited about it and having people jump in whether it is in an official volunteer capacity or just being here to support the Games as spectators or cheerleaders or even providing somebody with directions.’’

Despite a busy life as managing partner of Results Marketing and Advertising P.E.I., being a mother of two and being very involved with business and sports initiatives, she was happy to volunteer when approached to be a part of the board of management.

Sport has always been a big part of Howatt’s life.

She played basketball and soccer while earning a degree at UPEI, majoring in marketing.

Howatt also laces up as a member of the Charlottetown Hockey Mommas and has been a coach/manager of minor sports teams.

She is currently on the board of directors of the Charlottetown Airport Authority, the board of the Charlottetown Winsloe Soccer Association and the UPEI athletics advisory board.

She is also a member of a number of community organizations, including the UPEI Women’s Hockey Booster Club, the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce and 100 Women Who Care.
