CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Island Storm guard Alex Campbell has been named the top Canadian in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC).
The Brampton, Ont., native averaged 20 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 21 games in his sophomore season with the Storm.
Head coach Tim Kendrick said the franchise is very proud of Campbell.
“He scores for us, rebounds for us, defends the other team’s top players for us and makes his teammates better,” he said. “He is always ready and willing to do whatever I ask of him, even when not at his best physically, and never complains. He is a leader, a competitor and a great teammate. In my humble opinion, he is one of the very best players in the NBLC.”
It is the second year in a row and third time in four seasons a member of the Storm has won the award. Guillaume Boucard won it in 2018-19 while Terry Thomas took the honours in 2016-17.
The news comes on the heels of Campbell’s teammate Antwon Lillard being named the league’s rookie of the year.
Campbell was a member of the league’s all-Canadian squad in 2018-19 when he averaged 13.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. He then served as captain of the Saskatchewan Rattlers, which won the Canadian Elite Basketball League championship.
He played for the Niagara College Knights of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association before transferring to the University of Windsor.
