CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Austin Callaghan’s goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation time sent the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings to a season-opening sixth straight victory.
Callaghan broke a 2-2 tie and gave the defending Island Junior Hockey League and Don Johnson Memorial Cup Atlantic junior B champions a 3-2 road decision over the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros at the Cody Banks Arena on Wednesday night.
Chandler Wood and Isaac Callaghan each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings while Silas Handrahan added two helpers.
Colin Koughan and Barrington Duffy replied for the Metros, who dropped to 4-4-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Grant Koughan, Jordan Birt and Grant MacAdam added helpers.
Winning goaltender Luke Oliver stopped 25 of 27 shots. Matt Jelley had a busier night in the Metros’ goal, turning aside 44 of 47 shots.
The Metros will pay a return visit to the Red Wings on Sunday. Puck drop at the Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abram-Village is 2:15 p.m.
