Skip Suzanne Birt’s final shot was a bit inside in an extra end Sunday as the Island squad lost 5-4 in the final of the The Curling Store Cashspiel at the Lakeshore Curling Club in Lower Sackville, N.S.

Christina Black’s foursome from Halifax won the 12-team competition, earning $2,100 for the victory while Birt’s team was awarded $1,050.

The teams traded singles in the second and third ends before Birt took a 3-1 lead with a deuce in the fourth. The teams traded singles the next two ends before Black scored one in the seventh with hammer and stole one in the eight to force the extra end.

Birt needed to execute an angle hit to take out the opposing shot stone for the victory in the ninth, but it wasn’t to be.

The Birt rink includes third Marie Christianson, second Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid.

Birt went 2-1 in Pool C play, defeated Halifax’s Marlee Powers 4-3 in the quarter-final and Halifax’s Jill Brothers 5-3 in seven ends in the semifinal. Erin Carmody plays third for Brothers.

Shelly Bradley’s foursome of third Amanda Power, second Kristie Rogers and lead Aleya Quilty went 1-2 in Pool B action.
