Big third period extends Western Capitals' winning streak

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Three unanswered third-period goals helped the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals extend their winning streak in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
Kallum Muirhead, who also added two assists for a three-point night, scored 5:03 into the third period to break a 2-2 tie as the Caps went on to defeat the Fredericton Red Wings 5-2 on Saturday night before 1,408 fans at Eastlink Arena. Rookies Nick Reeves (11:38) and Colby MacArthur (17:28) added insurance goals as the Caps improved their league-leading record to 13-3-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Summerside has won five games in a row and eight of its last nine.
Team captain Brodie MacArthur (1-2), who is tied with Logan O’Neil of the South Shore Lumberjacks atop the league scoring race with 29 points, and Cameron Roberts also lit the lamp for the Caps. Ed McNeill, Zach Biggar and Theo Citrullo added helpers.
Eliot Bergbauer and Adam Zimmerman replied for the Red Wings (8-7-0).
The Caps led 2-0 after the first period and the teams went into the second intermission tied 2-2.
Winning goaltender Dominik Tmej stopped 30 of 32 shots while Erik MacInnis of Stratford made 28 saves on 33 shots in goal for Fredericton.
Referees Jeff Affleck and Chris Ivanko called five of the game’s seven minors against the Capitals.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Brodie MacArthur (Caps), 2. Kallum Muirhead (Caps), 3. Colby MacArthur (Caps).
The Caps’ next game is Thursday against the Miramichi Timberwolves (4-9-3). The opening faceoff at Eastlink Arena is set for 7 p.m.
