SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — It was a big night for the Summerside Western Capitals’ Zach Biggar.

The 16-year-old rookie defenceman from Portage, who has 17 points in 14 regular-season games, scored his first goal in the Maritime Junior Hockey League, collected three assists for a four-point night and was named the game’s first star as the Capitals downed the Miramichi Timberwolves 9-4 before 1,008 fans at Eastlink Arena on Thursday. The Caps, who were ranked No. 13 in this week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League’s top-20 rankings, have now won six games in a row and eight of their last nine.
Caps forward and team captain Brodie MacArthur scored twice and added two assists to take over the league scoring lead with 33 points, including 19 goals. Forward Kallum Muirhead also had four points – one goal and three assists – to move into second place in the league scoring with 31 points, including 12 goals.
Bennett MacArthur (2), Jacob Arsenault (1-1), Zach Thususka (1-1) and Josh MacDonald (1-1) rounded out the scoring for Summerside, which extended its league-leading record to 14-3-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Cam Roberts added a pair of helpers.
Walker Campbell, Jason Imbeault, Eric Pelletier and Connor McGregor of Charlottetown countered for the Timberwolves (4-10-3). Kennedy Gallant of Charlottetown chipped in with an assist.
The Caps built period leads of 4-1 and 6-2 while outshooting Miramichi 50-32. The winning goaltender was Alec MacVicar.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Zach Biggar (Caps), 2. Josh MacDonald (Caps), 3. Jacob Arsenault (Caps).
The Caps host the Campbellton Tigers (8-5-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
