CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — This fall’s Atlantic Challenge Cup hockey tournaments have been cancelled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19 strain) pandemic.

The tournaments are for under-14 and -15 boys as well as under-16 and -18 girls and were slated to take place Oct. 9-12 in Moncton.

The four Atlantic branches announced their decision Tuesday in a news release.

“The health and safety of all Canadians during this time is of the utmost importance to the Atlantic branches,” they said. “Together we have determined that during this time of uncertainty, cancelling this year’s event is in the best interest of all involved.”

Hockey P.E.I.’s co-ordinator of media relations and communications Tanner Doiron said there was uncertainty regarding what restrictions would be in place for the tournament. The branches also have to make financial and logistical decisions now for the tournament that is five months away.

Hockey P.E.I. is considering all options for its summer programming, including its high-performance program camps, and looks to relay its decision to member by June 1.
