Island gymnasts perform well at Eastern Canadians

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Gymnasts from the four main Island clubs competed recently at the Eastern Canadian championships at Credit Union Place in Summerside, with the host team producing some encouraging results.

With a strong contingent from Ontario and Quebec joining the four Atlantic provinces, it was always going to be a test for the Island team to get a placing or podium finish, but many produced their strongest performances of the year.

On the boys’ side, Ryan Dwyer of the Island Gymnastics Academy finished in a very credible seventh in all-around competition in elite 3, a division which features the finest up-and-coming gymnasts in the country. The highlight of Dwyer's competition was winning a bronze medal on pommel horse.

Hammill also secured a top-eight all-around placing when he finished in eighth place in the level 4 under-13 division.

On the girls’ side, Shailynn Richards of St. Louis secured a bronze medal on vault in the level 7 open division, while the level 8 novice team of Lilly Coughlin, Callie Harding and Ella MacDougall won a collective team bronze medal.

A number of gymnasts also secured top-eight finishes on individual events.

Girls

Level 7 tyro – Chloe Arsenault, 8th vault.

Level 7 novice – Summer McKenna, 8th beam.

Level 7 open – Shailynn Richards, 3rd vault and 7th beam.

Level 7 open – Ida Christensen, 8th beam.

Level 8 tyro – Emma King, 7th vault.

Level 8 tyro – Solen Trainor, 5th vault and 8th floor.

Level 8 novice – Ella MacDougall, 6th vault and 8th floor.

Level 8 novice – Lilly Coughlin, 5th floor.

Level 8 open – Tanisha Tawil, 8th bars.

Boys

Level 4 (under-13) –Josh Hammill, 8th AA, 8th floor, pommel horse, high bar and 7th rings.

Level 4 (under-13) – Gabriel Ing, 5th floor, 6th vault, 7th pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar.

Level 5 – Trent Quinn, 5th pommel horse, 7th parallel bars, high bar and 8th floor.

Level 5 – Leland Morgan, 8th vault.

Elite 3 – Ryan Dywer, 7th AA, 3rd pommel horse, 4th floor, parallel bars, 6th high bar and 7th rings.

Elite 3 – Oliver Wilson, 6th floor.
