CHARLOTTETOWN – Two P.E.I. skaters have qualified for the 2019 Skate Canada Challenge to be held at the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre in Edmonton, Alta., from Nov. 28 to Dec, 2.
Skate Canada Prince Edward Island recently partnered with Skate Canada Nova Scotia, where skaters competed for the coveted spots.
Emma Hynes of the Summerside Figure Skating Club won the gold medal for P.E.I. skaters in the pre-novice women’s event. Hynes had a score of 19.5 in the short program, and 40.34 in an impressive long program for a total of 59.84 – good for sixth place among 24 competitors from both P.E.I. and Nova Scotia – and a trip to the 2019 Skate Canada Challenge event that will crown the Canadian champion.
Kensington’s Katie Stavert-Bernard took silver with 19.56 in the short program, and 34.84 in the long program. Her total score of 54.40 placed 10th among all competitors.
Also representing Summerside was bronze-medallist Kaitlyn Smith. A short program score of 16.69 and 29.71 in the long program resulted in a 46.40 overall score and a 16h-place finish.
The Charlottetown Skating Club’s Kaylynne Vessey rounded out the P.E.I. entries, scoring a total of 37.58.
Other entry
Victoria Lange of Sherwood-Parkdale Skating Club will be Skate Canada P.E.I.’s only other entry in the Skate Canada Challenge. Lange, competing in the junior women’s class, earned a 27.35 score in the short program, 56.87 in the long for a total of 84.22 and a ticket to the Challenge event. She placed second overall in the four-skater field.
This is Lange’s first year competing in Sectionals since immigrating from Germany. She is hoping to advance through the Challenge to the 2019 Canadian Tire Skating championships in Saint John, N.B., in January 2019, where the top 18 junior women in the country will compete for the coveted title.
