CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes battled high winds and strong opposition on Saturday to win their home opener 35-6 over the UNBSJ Seawolves.
Practising in foul weather all week meant the team was prepared and ready, and with hurricane-like conditions in the forecast for game day, they needed to be.
The Hurricanes offence moved the ball well, controlling time of possession, and the defence shut down a strong Seawolves offence.
“Both offence and defence executed well in trying conditions, given the high winds,” said head coach Ross Young. “We will be working to reinforce the lessons we’ve learned so far this season as we prepare to go against the Dalhousie Tigers next weekend.”
‘Canes quarterback Brady Crowe led his offence with well-executed pass and run attack. Crowe was 15-for-24 passes on the day with 145 yards in the air and rushed for 25 yards, including a touchdown.
Receiver Tyler Majuary pulled in a Crowe pass for a major and running back Rodrigo Montes de Oca accumulated 83 yards rushing and a touchdown. Running back Thomas Cassidy rushed for 85 yards while kicker Brennan Davis added two field goals, a rogue and two extra points with rookie kicker Connor Cruickshank adding an extra point.
Cornerback Denzel Gendron-Muscadin had a strong day on defence for the ‘Canes with four tackles and intercepted a Seawolves pass for a pick-six. Linebacker Alex Rose had four tackles while defensive tackle Bradley Lawton had two sacks.
Jack Malo had 65 yards in punt returns and it might have been more had penalties not brought some of his returns back.
The Hurricanes improved to 2-0 while the Seawolves lost their second straight to Holland College to fall to 0-2.
The ‘Canes hit the road for Halifax on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest with the Dalhousie Tigers in a first-place showdown of 2-0 teams. The next home game is Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. on MacAdam Field at UPEI Canada Games Place.
