SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals will close out the pre-Christmas schedule in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) on the road this weekend.

The Capitals, who sit atop the Eastlink North Division at 19-4-0 (won-lost-overtime losses), visit the Grand Falls Rapids on Friday night, and then move on to Edmundston, N.B., to face the Blizzard (14-9-3) on Saturday evening. Grand Falls took a 6-15-4 record into Thursday night’s game against the Campbellton Tigers.

The Capitals, led by Dominik Tmej’s back-to-back shutouts in the team’s last two games, have allowed just one goal in their last three games while scoring 16 goals during this time.
Despite a quiet schedule of late, playing only eight games since Nov. 1, the Caps have won three straight and eight of their last 11 games. The Caps, who were ranked No. 5 in this week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League top-20 rankings, have 38 points, and are right in the thick of things in the race for first place in the overall standings.

Summerside trails the league-leading Yarmouth Mariners (24-5-1) by 11 points, but the Caps have played seven fewer games. The Amherst Ramblers (19-7-2) sit second in the overall standing with 40 points, but they have played five more games than Summerside.
The Capitals will return to action after Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 29, when they visit the Valley Wildcats (5-19-3). The Caps’ next home game is a 5 p.m. start against the Wildcats on New Year’s Eve.
