SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers have taken a big step towards securing home-ice advantage in the opening round of the Island Junior Hockey League playoffs.

Nick Trainor’s unassisted goal at 2:37 of overtime lifted the Vipers to a 2-1 win over the host Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros in a first-round playoff series preview on Wednesday night.
The Vipers, who have won all six games played in 2019, improved to 17-7-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) while opening up a 10-point lead over the third-place Metros (11-13-2). The Vipers have 11 games remaining in the regular season while the Metros have 10 left. The teams will meet three more times before the playoffs.
At the Cody Banks Arena, Kensington captain Parker Ronahan set up Morgan Darbyson’s game-tying goal on the power play at 17:43 of the third period.
Tanner Lund, assisted by Cale Pierce and Taylor Runighan, opened the scoring for the Metros with a power-play goal at 12:04 of the first period.
Caleb Coyle turned in a 27-save effort between the pipes for the Vipers. Liam Jay made 35 stops for the Metros.
