KENSINGTON – The Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers moved into a first-place tie in the Island Junior Hockey League on Sunday night.
The Vipers defeated the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros 5-3 to pull even with the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings. Kensington and Western both sport identical 9-3-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) records for 18 points, four ahead of the third-place Metros (7-8-0).
The Red Wings’ home game against the fourth-place Eastern Maniacs (0-11-0) at the Evangeline Recreation Centre on Sunday afternoon was postponed.
Three-point efforts
At Credit Union Centre in Kensington, Zack MacKay and Jonathan Arsenault each had one goal and two assists for three-point efforts while Garrett Murray tallied a pair of goals to lead the Vipers in a game that took under two hours to play. Kyle Pinksen (1-1) also scored while single assists went to Logan Vandervelden, CJ McCardle and Morgan Darbyson.
Jordan Birt (2) and Tanner Lund countered for the Metros. Barrington Duffy added three assists while other helpers went to Nick Currie (2) and Dylan MacDonald.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period, and the Vipers took a 3-2 advantage into the dressing room after 40 minutes.
Caleb Coyle stopped 30 of 33 shots in earning the goaltending victory. Ben Parent allowed four goals on 32 shots in the Sherwood-Parkdale goal.
