ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The UNB Varsity Reds are the 2017-18 Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champions.

The Varsity Reds, coached by Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall, blanked the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 5-0 before over 1,700 fans in Antigonish, N.S., on Wednesday night to clinch the title. Kinkora native Charlie Cameron is an assistant coach with UNB.
The win gives UNB a two-game sweep in the best-of-three final after winning the series opener 6-3 on home ice Monday night.
Both teams will compete in next week’s U Sports national men’s hockey championship, which will be hosted by UNB at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton.
The Varsity Reds, who received a 19-save shutout from Alex Dubeau, opened up period leads of 1-0 and 3-0 in Game 2.
Christopher Clappert (1-1), Matt Boudens (1-1), Mike Thomas, Alexandre Goulet and Cam Brace scored for UNB.
