SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Landon Clow had a goal and an assist Sunday while Alec MacVicar stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals won the Battle of the Bridge with a 3-0 victory over the Pictou County Weeks Crushers.
The win avenged a 1-0 loss to the Crushers in the opening game of the four-team Maritime Junior Hockey League pre-season tournament at Eastlink Arena.
“It was nice to win it. It shows we have some good young guys coming up,” Capitals’ head coach Billy McGuigan said.
It was MacVicar’s second game with Summerside after being acquired Friday night from the Yarmouth Mariners.
“He was outstanding in nets, recording a shutout and made some real key saves at key times for us,” the bench boss said.
Kallum Muirhead scored the game-winning goal while Zach Thususka added an insurance marker. Josh MacDonald had two assists while singles went to Marc-Andre LeCouffe, captain Brodie MacArthur and Riley Hurlbert.
Matthew Normore stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced in the 50-minute game for the Crushers.
While the victory was nice for the host squad, the tournament was about identifying the players who will wear the Caps’ uniform this season. Seeing players in game situations helped the coaching staff narrow down its roster.
The Capitals began Sunday with a 6-3 victory over the Amherst Ramblers.
Colby MacArthur scored four times and Muirhead added a pair in the victory. Brodie MacArthur and Brodie MacMillan each had two assists while singles went to Cam Robert, Bennett MacArthur and LeCouffe.
Michal Sivek, Robbie Burt and Stephen Fox replied with Amherst’s goals.
MacVicar stopped seven of nine shots for the win while Aiden Williams made 21 saves on 22 shots in relief. Mathias Savoie allowed six goals on 35 shots in Amherst’s crease.
