Robert Steeves made 25 saves to backstop the visiting Axemen to a 2-1 win, despite being outshot 26-13.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Panthers captain Brent Andrews said. “We pumped a lot of shots his way, we limited their chances and we thought we deserved a better (result) tonight. It’s one of those games you just have to find a way to win and we didn't tonight.”

Andrews was robbed of the equalizer when he fired a shot from the slot on goal with 11 seconds to play.

“It’s definitely going to stick with me here tonight,” he admitted. “The puck was rolling, I should have maybe settled it down, but that’s something you could think about all week and not know the right answer, so I can’t dwell on that too much.”

Chad Labelle knows the feeling.

He had a couple of glorious chances, but each time Steeves rose to the occasion.

“We outshot them 2-1, we just have to start putting the puck in the net,” he said.

Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Labelle redirected a Kurt Etchegary pass, but couldn’t beat the goalie.

“It’s frustrating when you get all of it and you shoot it right back into the goalie. You just try to forget about it, move on and capitalize on the next chance you have.”

Remy Giftopoulos scored 8:26 into the game and Alexander Lepkowski made it 2-0 4:23 into the second period. Michael Clarke, Brett Thompson, Daniel Patterson and Stephen Harper had assists for Acadia.

Sam Aulie had a couple of good chances early in the third, but was turned back.

R.T. Rice’s shot went iron and in 5:10 into the third period. Labelle and Etchegary had the helpers.

Rice, with his family in the stands from British Columbia, took a puck in the chin late in the game, but appeared to be OK after the contest.

Steeves made a couple saves late in the game on Labelle, including one from the slot off a fake shot and pass from Casey Babineau. Cody Payne ripped one off Steeves’ shoulder and out of play as the Panthers outshot the Axemen 10-3 in the final 20 minutes.

The Panthers are hoping to carry the momentum into today’s 7 p.m. contest with the Saint Mary’s Huskies at MacLauchlan Arena.

“We have to play like we did in the third period all game long,” Labelle said. “We just have to come out like we played in the third and give everything we’ve got. It’s a big night – alumni night – so we have to get a win.”

Acadia improved to 15-7-1 while UPEI is 8-11-4. Acadia and UPEI combined for 32 penalty minutes after racking up the PIMs the previous two meetings. Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play.

Before Friday’s game, the Panthers 1986-87 and 1987-88 Atlantic Universities Athletics Association championship squads were introduced on the ice. Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best” played after the players went on the ice.
