KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — The Sackville Blazers are off to a winning start at the 2019 Don Johnson Memorial Cup Atlantic junior B hockey championship tournament.
Michael Hardie’s goal at 2:33 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie as the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League champions overcame a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-2 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador’s CBR Renegades on Wednesday afternoon.
Nick Cullen, Andrew Picot and Matthew Berrigan also scored for the Blazers.
Tyler Wall and Blake Fudge each had a goal and an assist for the Renegades, who held a slim 38-37 shots-on-goal advantage.
The Renegades led 2-1 after the first period and the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of 40 minutes.
Winning goaltender was Justin Sumarah and Jordan Blackwood tended goal for the Renegades.
Each team was assessed two minor penalties.
Also Wednesday, New Brunswick’s Moncton Vitos and the Island Junior Hockey League-champion Western Red Wings meet at 4 p.m., and the final game of the day features the host Kensington Vipers facing the Renegades at 8 p.m.
Round-robin play in the five-team tournament concludes Friday night. The top four teams at the end of the round robin advance to Saturday’s semifinals at 3 and 7 p.m. The final is Sunday at 2 p.m.
